Our Prediction

Race for 1st place

Germany under Julian Nagelsmann are the firm favourites to top Group E. The 2024 Euros run rebuilt confidence, and the spine of Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz and Joshua Kimmich is one of the strongest in the tournament. Germany should beat Curaçao and Ecuador comfortably; the Ivory Coast fixture on matchday 3 will likely already be settled for first place. Maximum points is the realistic target.

Race for 2nd place

Ecuador are the slight favourites for second. Sebastián Beccacece's side has built one of the tightest defensive blocks in CONMEBOL, conceding the fewest goals in qualifying, with Moisés Caicedo, Pervis Estupiñán and Kendry Páez forming a balanced spine. Ecuador's path: a draw against Ivory Coast on matchday 1, a comfortable win against Curaçao, and a defeat to Germany — leaving them on 4 points, very likely enough for second.

Third-place playoff slot

Ivory Coast are the favourites for the third-place playoff slot. Reigning African champions under Emerse Faé, with Sébastien Haller, Franck Kessié and Simon Adingra, the Elephants are a physical, fast-transition team capable of beating any second-tier opponent. The realistic path: a draw with Ecuador, a defeat to Germany and a clear win over Curaçao — 4 points should secure a best-third place.

Bottom of the group

Curaçao are the obvious group bottom — and yet their mere participation is a triumph. Dick Advocaat's squad, recruited largely from the Dutch lower divisions and second tier of Europe, is making the country's first-ever World Cup. The realistic goal is a single goal scored and a respectable performance, most likely against Ivory Coast on matchday 3.
